World Design Capital Frankfurt
With the theme Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a better life, the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region has been awarded the title World Design Capital® 2026. Under the motto Looking forward – shaping tomorrow together, the calendar highlights inclusion and cultural diversity in Hesse, reflects on the cornerstones of our coexistence and presents visions for future-oriented urban development that focuses on encounters and community.
The photograph shows the ‘Gala der Travestie’ in Frankfurt – a space of diversity and acceptance. The photo was taken during an intimate moment of transformation. It symbolises places where individuality is protected and can be freely expressed. Democracy begins in everyday life – where people can participate equally, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
